We will take you along the historical time line from the sugarcane plantations till the present on ‘The Sugar Trail’. You will enjoy a relaxing trip to Commewijne, and learn about this district’s bittersweet past.
In the morning we will take a boat trip on the Upper Commewijne River to the former Concordia sugar plantation. We will explore the remains of a water mill and steam engine from a sugar refinery that dates back to around 1830. Although nature has covered history’s tracks here, you will learn about the history of slavery through vivid stories.
The town of Tamanredjo is famous for its Javanese cuisine. We will enjoy a delightful lunch here.
In the afternoon we will explore the past of Mariënburg plantation by visiting the abandoned factory. A former laborer will give us a tour of the site. His fascinating stories will take you back to the time of the contract laborers, and bring the ruins to life.
We will travel back to Paramaribo by boat on the Suriname River. During this enjoyable boat trip we will explain rum production, after which you can enjoy a delicious cocktail with Surinamese rum.
