Birdwatching Warappa
For more than 60 years the Warappa Creek was inaccessible, but recently it was opened and now boats can reach the ocean.
The area can be divided in four parts. An old Mangrove forest with mainly Red and Black Mangroves. An open grass swamp with young Black Mangroves and some forests of older Black Mangroves. A dead forest followed by open flat area of hard mud. A mud bank at the Atlantic ocean.
Warappa creek is a birdwatchers paradise. The very important target species the Rufous Crab Hawk Buteogallus aequinoctialis is extremely common in the whole area. The near-endemic Blood-colored Woodpecker Veniliornis sanguineus and the endemic Arrowhead Piculet Picumnus minutissimus are also common, but not always easy to find.
The Blackish Antbird Cercomacra nigrescens can be found in Bakkie and Ashy-headed Greenlet Hylophilus pectoralis is easy to find. Spectacular birds like Scarlet Ibis Eudocimus ruber, Roseate Spoonbill Platalea ajaja and Wood Stork Mycteria Americana are often encountered.
And sometimes a Jabiru Jabiru mycteria is present. The latter 4 birds may forage on the mudflat in front of the coast together with thousands of North American shorebirds, egrets, Black Skimmers Rynchops niger and night herons. An observation hut built in front of the mangroves will give a marvelous view on these birds.
The Pygmy Kingfisher Chloroceryle aenea is very common in the old mangrove forest and can be seen sitting on the arch-shaped stilt roots of the Red Mangrove, while floating quietly with the tide. The much rarer Green-and-Rufous KingfisherChloroceryle inda is also occurring here. Eight species of Woodpeckers are seen regularly. And the spectacular Toco Toucan Ramphastos toco has been seen. In total 166 species are known for the area, but this number will surely increase after more observations have been made.
