This two day trip to the Marowijne district, accompanied by artist Ken Doorson, offers a unique combination of nature, culture, art and history.

A feature of this trip is the emphasis on modern art. Around Moengo an art route with the works of Marcel Pinas will be followed, including the Moiwana Monument. In Moengo the Tembe Art Studio will be visited. This is a special art school for youngsters where painting, music and dance lessons are given. In the initial stage of the sculpture garden you can view the large works of art of the international ‘Artists in Residence’. In Moengo-Tapoe you will visit the atelier of woodcarving artist Oscar Adogo.

The magnificent boat trip on the dark Cottica river will take you along Aucanian villages with a quiet and timeless atmosphere, so different from the Upper-Suriname area. In the friendly village Pikin Santi you can relax. The village Tamarin with its old buildings and boarding school is a worthwhile place to visit. During the boat trip you will enjoy the green scenery, the several transients and you will get to know the area, the people and their history better.

Ken Doorson will take you to the district where he was born and will acquaint you with the people who live there, their lifestyle and their kindness. Don’t worry is the creed.
Part of the income from the trip will be donated to the art projects of Moengo.

Cottica; a small-scale trip full of inspiration and special meetings.

Tembe Art Studio:
Marcel Pinas and Ken Doorson have started some art projects to change the image of the Marowijne district. This resulted in the Tembe Art Studio in Moengo, where they have started with lessons aimed at the development of art and cultural education of the local community. The lessons are given in a wing of the Moengo hospital.

The purpose of the project is to make children and elderly people familiar with different forms of art (dance, music and theatre). By participating in various activities they learn to discover and develop their own talents. Part of the income of this trip will be donated to the art projects of Moengo and Tembe Art Studio.
