Matapica beach

Matapica beach is a unique place in Suriname. This unspoiled, rugged beach  is a wonderful place to relax. The special trip to get there certainly contributes to the rural effect of this place.

DAYTRIP MATAPICA
You can only get there a few months out of the year through the former plantation 'Johan & Margaret. There you step in a small boat that takes you through a brilliant vista to the hidden beach. You sail over the flooded old plantation with a grand view and through the old irrigation channels. When you reach the swamp the boat has to maneuver through a maze of narrow passages. Various species of birds fly over and there is hardly any mosquito in sight.
Once arrived on the beach you can spend the day in long beach walks, sunbathing or with a book in a hammock between the trees. The vastness and desolation of this place and the freedom to choose your own pace ensure the ultimate relaxation.

Daytrip Matapica
Departure from Leonsberg or Paramaribo. 50 minutes to Johan & Margaretha, swamp trip to Matapica 1 hour. Return around 18:00.
Included: Hot meal from Johan & Margaretha, soda, juices and fruit. Hammocks and utilities.

TWO DAY TRIP SEA TURTLES MATAPICA [Seasonal]
After the exciting trip to the beach as described above, install yourself and enjoy the lunch that was taken along. In the afternoon stroll along the beach and discover it all by yourself with the sun and the restless waves as company.
In the evening, the local guide of the Suriname Nature Conservation Foundation (Stinasu) takes you to the beach to witness the egg laying of the turtles.
The next morning you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast and spend the morning again undisturbed and at your own pace. Around lunch time, the boatman arrives with a fresh hot lunch. After lunch he takes you back to town.

You spend the night at the Stinasu base camp. There is no running water although there is a toilet and shower stall where you can rinse of. There are basic kitchen facilities and a dining area. The accommodations are simple rooms with bunk beds equipped with mosquito nets.

The principle of using local guides and being supplied with your own catering and accessories gives you the freedom to spent time at your own pace in this unique setting.
